FSWA Profile: Andy Behrens
Friday, 29 April 2011 06:36

The Montreal Expos have spawned some of baseball’s best on-the-field talent during the mid-90s. They were a breeding ground for future high-profiled free agents and they were the stomping grounds for a fantasy "juggernaut" writer named Andy Behrens.

As a child, Behrens grew up in Chicago as a Bulls fan. It was his core team since they were always on television. He remembers trips to the old Chicago Stadium to watch them play. Being a tall and awkward kid, he naturally gravitated towards idolizing the Bulls’ center Artis Gilmore, hook shot and all.

As a college student at the University of Iowa Behrens was exposed to fantasy football. It blossomed into an addicting habit but nothing more.

It wasn’t until 10 years ago that Behrens started his fantasy writing career, quitting his corporate job to stay home and raise his daughter. Coming to the conclusion that he could write better than the current sports journalists in Chicago, Behrens quickly picked up freelancing fantasy sports articles and turned to a welcoming alternative Chicago press.

Armed with a natural snarky and sarcastic writing style, Behrens has proven to be successful in the fantasy industry. He currently writes for Yahoo! Sports, and is the mastermind behind "Roto Arcade," a daily fantasy sports recap article.

"The fantasy sports industry was lacking a daily column," Behrens reminisced. "We had all these great writers writing these long, detailed columns twice a week, but nothing every day and I was always good at making deadlines …"

He also hosts a radio program titled: Yahoo! Fantasy Blitz with his colleague Brad Evans, and admits that sometimes getting players on the air can be difficult, a challenge that many fantasy journalists experience.

"You are sitting at the kid’s table," Behrens joked. He was then quick to point out that fantasy sports have become more main stream in society and they have become major tool for a professional athlete to brand themselves with.

Behrens has also written for ESPN.com and he credits his top-notch editors and colleagues with helping to influence and advance his writing career.

"Brandon Funston is a great editor; I really respect Mathew Berry over at ESPN and Christopher Harris too. It meant a lot when Chris asked me to write a weekly column for his online publication, HoleCity"

Harris won the 2005 "Talented Mr. Roto" contest, and asked Behrens to join him, jumpstarting his career as a fantasy sports journalist. Together they teamed up to become fantasy basketball’s Dynamic Duo, a catalyst for Behrens becoming a fantasy writer for NBA.com.

A huge fan of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Behrens advice for young writers looking to break into the fantasy sports industry isn’t very "Jeff Spicoli" of him.

"Do it every day, paid or not, find work and write every day. I said yes to everyone, virtually everyone. I didn’t turn anyone down."
